| Description: | Martha (Barbara Stanwyck) lived with her aunt, a wealthy, dictatorial, mean woman. Walter (Kirk Douglas) also lived there because his father was Martha's tutor. Martha was best friend was Sam (Van Heflin), from the wrong side of the tracks. One evening, Martha catches her aunt beating her cat and knocks her over the head. The aunt falls down the stairs and dies. Walter saw it happen, but backed up Martha's story about an intruder. Walter's father arranges for Walter to marry Martha, even though she doesn't love him, and to become the D.A. Years later, Sam happens into town and takes up with local girl Toni (Lizabeth Scott). When she is arrested for breaking parole (she had been in prison for theft), Sam goes to Walter to get her freed. Walter assumes that Sam knew about the murder of Martha's aunt (he didn't) and that he's in town to blackmail them. Sam has no such plans, but when Walter has him beaten and thrown out of town, he decides to get back at him. He investigates and finds out about Martha's aunt and about the innocent man who was hung for it. He flirts with the idea of blackmail, but when Martha urges him to kill Walter, Sam decides he wants no part of it. Walter kills Martha and himself in a murder/suicide. Sam goes back to his hotel and finds Toni waiting for him. |
