Description:At the start of the U.S. involvement in WWI, cowboy Bill Pettigrew (James Stewart) accidentally meets actress Daisy Heath (Margaret Sullavan). Teased by his mates, Bill pretends Daisy is his sweetheart, and she goes along with it. For Bill, the "romance" feels real. He doesn't realize that Daisy is the girlfriend of Sam (Walter Pidgeon), a society bigwig. As Daisy gets to know Bill, she begins to like him, but more as a mother than a lover. Sam gets jealous, which causes him to stop taking Daisy lightly and profess his love, which Daisy returns. But when Bill goes AWOL to propose marriage just before being sent overseas, Daisy agrees because she knows Bill needs the idea of a great love. Sam goes along with it because, at heart, he's a decent guy. Bill writes Daisy every day until he's killed in battle.

Reviews for The Shopworn Angel

Review - Shopworn Angel, The

Stewart was great as the naive soldier. Pidgeon was great as the jealous but patient lover. Sullavan isn't my favorite — I think there are other actresses who could have done this better. It was a sweet, sad movie.
