Description:When her parents were killed by Indians, Eve (Rita Tushingham) was struck mute. She lived with a Canadian shopkeeper and his wife, who looked upon her as a servant. When the wife wanted money to move to San Francisco, she sold Eve to Jean (Oliver Reed), a crude trapper. He dragged Eve to his remote cabin in the woods where she kept house for him, but she refused all his advances. Out hunting, he breaks his foot in a bear trap and staggers home. His foot needs to be amputated, and Eve does it, then nurses him back to health. But he gets angry when, after and entire winter together, she still refuses to share his bed. He pressures her into sleeping with him, but when he assumes it's going to be a regular thing, she takes off in the canoe and gets caught in the rapids. She's found by Indians and taken back to town. She's about to get married to a clerk when she realizes she wants to be with Jean, so she grabs a canoe and goes back to him.

Review - Trap, The

The basic story was interesting, although there were a lot of things that didn't make much sense if you paid attention — like how Eve managed to get back to the cabin by herself when, on the earlier trip, she and Jean had had to drag the canoe up rapids and make long portages. Reed overplayed his part at times. Tushingham was excellent, although I thought she would speak before the movie was over and she didn't.
