Description:During WWII, two British soldiers, Anson (John Mills) and Pugh (Harry Andrews) have to convey two nurses to Alexandria to avoid the approaching Germans. Along the way, they pick up van der Poel (Anthony Quayle), who claims he's South African but is really a German spy. One of the nurses is killed in a run-in with German tanks. The other, Diana (Sylvia Syms) and the three men battle sand, lack of water, heat, and car problems. The Brits suspect van der Poel fairly soon, but he repeatedly helps them out of situations that would have been almost impossible to get out of without him. When they finally get to Alexandria, they turn him over to the authorites as a P.O.W. so he will be put in prison instead of shot.

Review - Ice Cold in Alex

Very realistically portrayed how miserable it would be to cross the desert in an ambulance, but for that reason, it rather dragged at times. Also, while van der Poel was shown to be a German by sneaking off and sending radio messages, it never explained what information he could possibly have to send.
