Description:George Bird (Alec Guinness) is told by his doctor that he has a disease that will soon kill him. He quits his job, takes all his money out of savings, and heads to a posh resort filled with people from a higher class of society. He confides somewhat in the housekeeper, Mrs. Poole (Kay Walsh), who advises him to remain mysterious and have fun speaking his mind. He begins making friends and making suggestions that change people's lives for the better. At the same time, he suddenly begins winning at cards, winning on the horses, getting amazing job opportunities. He's attracted to Sheila (Beatrice Campbell), whose husband is in legal trouble. He pays the husbands way out of it. Before long, everyone is indebted to him but can't figure out why he doesn't grab the chances being offered. Then he meets a doctor who informs him that there's no way he has the disease he thinks he has. He rushes back to confront the doctor who made the diagnoses while his friends at the resort prepare a celebratory dinner for him. On the way back, he gets in an accident and is killed. Upset that he's late, his "friends" begin belittling him—until Mrs. Poole, who really cared for him, tells them the news.

Review - Last Holiday

Definitely black humor. Makes fun of the upper class while still presenting them as people. Some great characters and fun to watch, although the ending was a downer.
