Description:Ellen (Loretta Young) gets a job as a maid for the wealthy Winfield's, soon serving as Mrs. Winfield's personal maid. She has to ward off the advances of the crooked butler, Wroxton (Basil Rathbone). Out on the town one night, she has all her money stolen and has to accept a ride with a stranger. He takes her to a gambling house, which is raided, and she has to call Wroxton to get her out of jail. She meets the Winfield's son, Richard (Robert Taylor), and he falls in love with her. She tries to tell him it won't work, but he wins her heart and secretly marries her. He goes off to finish is final semester in college, leaving her to work as a maid for a little while. Wroxton finds out she's pregnant and, upset that she won't submit to him, reports her to Richard's parents. When Richard's mother is inclined to give Ellen a break, Wroxton reveals Ellen's arrest. Richard's father believes Ellen is out to blackmail the family and offers her money. She refuses and takes off to a friend's house where she has her baby. Richard is led to believe that she's out to scam him, so he allows his father to sue her for anulment. Wroxton bribes the man who got her arrested to testify against her falsely, but Richard finds out what Wroxton has done and withdraws the charges. Ellen is hurt at first, but when he shows up and apologizes, all is forgiven.

Review - Private Number

Interesting little set piece with some strong characters. Rathbone was truly slimy in his role, and Young was lovely in hers as the good girl mistreated. Taylor didn't have a lot to do, but was convincing as a man in love.
