Description:Larry Ballentine (Robert Young) married Greta (Rita Johnson) for her money. He begins an affair with Janice (Jane Greer) and plans on running off with her. But Greta finds out and insists that Larry move to L.A. with her. He caves when he finds out she bought him a partnership in a brokerage. He begins and affair with Verna (Susan Hayward), who admits to being a gold-digger. Greta finds out about Verna too, and moves Larry to a remote ranch. He finds a way to connect with Verna, and they make plans to run off. Larry sends Greta a note, then heads to Reno with Verna. They get in an accident, and Verna is killed. Everyone thinks it was Greta who died, so Larry figures he can go back to the ranch and kill her and nobody will know. But when he gets there, he discovers that Greta committed suicide. He hides the body and takes off with Greta's money. Janice comes looking for him and talks him into returning to L.A. Cops investigate and discover Greta's body. Larry is arrested for murder. At the trial, he gives the whole story, but he doesn't think anyone will believe him—even though Janice says she does and wants to be with him. Just before the verdict is read, Larry attempts to jump out a window and is shot dead. The verdict is not guilty. Apparently he had reviewed his own life, considered himself guilty of both deaths even if not directly the cause, and was trying to commit suicide.

Review - They Won't Believe Me

Larry seemed pretty scuzzy, dull and weak, but he apparently could draw attractive women. I really didn't care what happened to him because he certainly didn't deserve happiness even if he didn't kill anyone. I thought the whole shooting a not guilty man so he doesn't jump to his death was a bit much.
