Description:A group of Irish separatists decide to rob the Bank of England to finance their movement and embarrass the British. Iris (Elizabeth Sellars) recruits her old lover, Irish-American thief Charles Norgate (Aldo Ray) to head the job. He befriends Capt. Monty Fitch (Peter O'Toole), a drunken, bored soldier tasked with guarding the bank. There's all the usual bits about finding the plans, tensions in the gang, gathering materials. They access the vault through an abandoned sewer after a weekend of digging. Just as they get a million pounds of bullion into the sewer, the head of the separatist movement calls the job off. Norgate and two associates decide to go ahead with it. Iris sends the barge away, removing their chief means of escape. Two men load much of the gold on a cart but get caught when it breaks down on a city street. Norgate goes back into the vault to find a bum who wandered in and is caught when Fitch, thinking about his friendship with Norgate, figures out the plan and insists on having the vault checked out.

Review - Day They Robbed the Bank of England, The

Pretty dull, actually. All the characters are boring except for O'Toole as the reluctant hero. And of course they couldn't have the bad guys get away with it so there really wasn't much suspense.
