Description:Andy Shaeffer (Tab Hunter) is a spoiled rich brat who plans on staying in college long enough to avoid the draft. His girlfriend Susan (Natalie Wood) thinks he's irresponsible and breaks up with him. Andy moons about it and fails a course, which makes him legible for the draft. He goes into the Army with a bad attitude, shirks and mouths off every chance he gets, and is finally recommended for a dishonorable discharge. But before that can happen, there's a training exercise. Andy becomes a hero because he tells some soldiers to stop hiding in a tank which was the target for bombs. In the final scene, he's suddenly a corporal and, supposedly, a man.

Review - Girl He Left Behind, The

Tab Hunter was unlikeable in every scene in this movie, even after he grew up. Anybody that obnoxious would have be punished much more severely and beaten up by his own platoon mates. The question isn't why Susan would break up with him but what on earth did she ever see in him to begin with. The maybe 10 minutes that Natalie Wood are on the screen were the only parts remotely worth watching.

And that one scene that made Andy a man. He's put in charge of a group to establish a command post. He tells four of his men to go to another hilltop, but to go along the ridge and avoid the area around the tanks in the valley because the Navy is using that for gunnery practice. So the four men take off and quickly decide it's quicker to cut through the valley. The bombs start falling, so they ... are you ready for this? ... they climb into one of the tanks. Andy, seeing what happens, runs into the valley and tells them to get out of the tank. The run to some nearby trees (as though trees could stop Navy shells), turn around and watch the tank get blown to pieces. At which point, the men thank Andy for saving their lives, and he's made a corporal. That's one of the dumbest bits I've ever seen in a movie.

There's a rule of thumb—the more famous actors that appear in a movie you've never heard of, the better the chance the movie stinks. This movie included Jim Backus, Alan King, James Garner, David Janssen, and a bunch of other character actors I couldn't name but recognized. And I'd never heard of it, and it stunk.
