| Description: | In France in 1944, a group of American soldiers are surrounded. A general, his driver Sgt. Murphy (Glenn Ford) and Cpl. Derby (Red Buttons) set up headquarters in a farm house where they find Simone (Taina Elg), a French girl. The general is killed by a sniper, and Murphy decides to impersonate him for the duration of the battle, with reluctant help from Derby. With a ragtag group of men, he manages to kill a group of German in a look-out post, wipe out four German tanks, and hold out until relief arrives. He's knocked unconscious, and Derby manages to hide his identity and have all the credit for the victory given to the real (dead) general. While all this is happening, Murphy and Simone fall in love, and Murphy promises to return when the war is over. |
