Description:A teenage girl (Jenny Agutter) and her younger brother are driven out into the Australian outback on a picnic. Without warning, he tries to shoot them, then destroys the car and kills himself. The two kids take off across the desert and are about to die when they meet a teenage Aboriginal boy on his rite-of-passage walkabout. He shows them how to survive, catches food, makes fire, finds water. They stay with him until they reach the edge of civilization, at which point he dances himself to exhaustion and dies. The girl and her brother walk along a road until they find someone. The movie then jumps ahead to show the girl, now married, fantasizing about swimming with the Aboriginal boy and her brother.

Review - Walkabout

This movie was filmed as though it was intellectually deep, and it's liked by people who like to think they're intellectually deep, but actually it was slow-moving, obscure, and pointless. Why did the dad try to kill them? Why didn't they just follow the tire tracks back instead of wandering off? How long were they gone? Why did the Aboriginal boy die? Where was the kid's mother in all this? We don't get the answer to any of these questions, and really we don't care.
