Description:Captain Johnny Angel (George Raft) happens upon his father's ship and finds it deserted, but with evidence of violence. He brings it into port and soon discovers that there was a stowaway on board — Paulette (Signe Hasso), a French woman. He tracks her down and finds out she's in danger. Determined to find out who killed his father and to protect Paulette, whom he falls in love with, he investigates with the help of a street-wise cabbie (Hoagy Carmichael). It turns out that Lily (Claire Trevor), the wife of the shipping company Johnny works for, found out about a shipment of gold under the care of Paulette's father. She convinces her husband Gusty (Marvin Miller) to kill Paulette's father and ship the gold on one of his own ships (the one captained by Johnny's father). He then kills the crew and brings the gold back to Lily. But Lily double-crosses him and attempts to kill him so she can be with Johnny (who has no interest in her). In the end, Gusty is killed, Paulette is sent to prison, and Johnny ends up with Paulette.

Review - Johnny Angel

Weird movie. Hoagy's cabbie character was cool, and I liked Hasso's Paulette, but Raft has the charisma of a wet brick and the whole action that revolved around Johnny and Paulette seemed to have very little to do with Lily and Gusty until the very end, making it an overly complicated movie and not interesting enough to make it worth figuring out.
