Description:Kathy O'Brien (Anna Lee) and her father search for diamonds in Africa. They fail, and hitch a ride back to civilization with Allan Quartermain (Cedric Hardwicke). They meet an African man named Umbopa (Paul Robeson), who encourages them to seek King Solomon's mines. Kathy's father steals a wagon and takes off for the mines. Kathy convinces Quartermain and two hunters, Good and Curtis, to follow. Umbopa tags along. When they get to the mine, they find it guarded by a tribe ruled by Twala, a ruthless tyrant who controls his people with fear of his witch doctor, and old woman. Umbopa reveals to his white friends that he is the rightful ruler of the tribe and promises them riches if they help him gain the throne. There's a big battle, won when Curtis kills Twala. During the battle, Kathy entered the mine to find her father. He's surrounded by riches but has a broken leg. The witch makes part of the mine ceiling collapse, which sets off a volcano. The heros escape but without the diamonds. Umbopa sees that they get safely home.

Review - King Solomon's Mines

I suppose, in 1937, this might have been pretty exciting, but it didn't move me. Several minutes were taken up with shots of the traveler's feet walking through sand. Several more minutes were taken up with native dances that weren't explained and didn't further the plot. And even more minutes were taken up with annoyingly repetitive, meaningless songs by Robeson.
