Description:Basically the same plot as the book. Newspaperwoman Theresa (Robin Wright) finds a bottle on the beach. In it is a note that boatwright Garrett (Kevin Costner) wrote to his dead wife, Catherine. Theresa travels to the port where Garrett lives and, basically, seduces him. They fall in love, but Theresa doesn't tell Garret she has his bottle letter. When he finds out, he's mad and takes off. There's drama about whether they'll get back together or not. Garrett writes one last letter to Catherine, but when he sails out to sea to toss it in, he gets caught in a storm. He sees a family on a sinking boat and tries to save them but drowns. Theresa finds the letter Garrett meant to send to Catherine. In it, he tells her about Theresa, his love for her, and his plans to win her back. Paul Newman is around as Dodge, Garrett's kind but grumpy father.

Review - Message in a Bottle

A little better than the book. Garrett's death was still unnecessary, as he was violating every safe-boating practice there is. Wright was good as Theresa, although she still basically fell in love with a man's letter to his ex-wife and then seduced him, which is weird. Costner was his usually taciturn self.
