Description:Near the end of the Civil War, the Confederacy releases five death-row criminals and sends them west in search of a traitor and $30,000 in gold. Govern (John Lund) takes charge, although the other men aren't thrilled about it. Hale (Mike Connors) tries to make deals with the others to split the gold and kill the rest of the crew. When they get to where the stage is expected, they find an old drunk running the station with help from his beautiful niece, Shalee (Dorothy Malone). The men intend to make her part of the treasure, but Govern keeps them from hurting her. The stage arrives, the escorting soldiers are killed, and the traitor is caught. But the gold isn't on board. The traitor says it's back in California, and Hale intends to take him there to get it. When Govern says no, Hale figures out that Govern is really a Confederate officer. The bunch split up. Govern takes refuge in the house with Shalee, her uncle, the traitor, while the four criminals are outside. One of them decides he doesn't want to die and leaves. The other three attack the house and are killed. Govern takes the traitor back to the Confederacy, but tells Shalee he intends to come back for her.

Review - Five Guns West

Corman is well known for filming cheap B movies. This was his first and it fit the bill. Little about it makes sense. If there is gold to recover, why send criminals after it? Why pretend Govern was also a criminal? Why did characters keep appearing and disappearing in some scenes? Why did Shalee fall in love with Govern one day? Why was she there at all? Why did I watch this?
