| Description: | Clovis (James Stewart) runs a winery in California and takes care of his two grandchildren, Kelly (Stephanie Zimbalist) and Chris, who is 10. His neighbor, Jamison (Pernell Roberts) wants to buy the land. When Clovis refuses to sell, Jamison comes up with a scheme to steal his Collie, Lassie, by claiming it was his but ran away as a puppy. He takes Lassie back to Colorado, but the dog soon runs off. When Chris finds out Lassie ran away, he also runs away and attempts to get to Colorado by hitching rides on trucks. Clovis then takes off to find Christ. Even though it's about 1,200 miles, the three somehow kept passing each other without knowing it or staying in the same hotels. For a while Lassie hitches a ride with Gus (Mickey Rooney), the manager of an aged professional wrestler. Chris ends up in a truck stop diner and is given free food by the waitress (Alice Faye). With help from the police, Clovis finds Chris and takes him home. A lawyer who is dating Kelly researches and finds that Jamison's claim to the dog is bogus. Clovis gets news that Lassie died in a fire just as the family is sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner, but during prayer, Christ jumps up because he hears Lassie, which was pretty magical since the dog was just trotting along what, based on the reunion scene, must have been at least half a mile away. |
