Description:Halford, one of the directors of a crooked investment firm, is found shot to death in his car. Ace reporter Steve Grey (Spencer Tracy), known as the Murder Man because he always somehow manages to scoop the other papers, investigates. Through his suggestions and testimony, Halford's partner, Mander, is convicted of the murder and sentenced to death. Disturbed by sending a man to his death, Gray quits the paper and hides out in a remote cabin, the location only known to Mary (Virginia Bruce), an advice columnist on his paper, who loves him. When the day for Mander's execution arrives, Grey is sent to get a final interview. Mander pleads his innocence. Grey goes back to the paper and writes a final story — telling of his own confession of the murder and why he did it. His wife had been seduced by Halford, who took all of her and Grey's money. When the wife realizes what she'd done, she killed herself. In retaliation, Grey had killed on of the partners and framed the other. After writing the story, he turns himself in to the police. Mary tries to stop him but can't. Grey is arrested, but the captain tells Mary that the end is a long way off and that juries take a lot of things into consideration. Jimmy Stewart has a minor role as a reporter named Shorty.

Review - Murder Man, The

I'm not sure why I liked this so much. The surprise ending, for sure. I didn't see it coming. And it was fun to see Stewart in his first role. But I think Virginia Bruce made the movie as the decent woman who pined for Steve Grey and tried to get him to make the most of himself.
