Description:Career criminal Duke Berne (Humphrey Bogart) gets out of prison after serving his third term for robbery. His old gang, led by his crooked lawyer Fleming, contacts him about robbing an armored car. Unable to get work because of his past, Duke considers it. But Fleming's wife, Lorna (Irene Manning), Duke's old flame, talks him out of it. She convinces Duke she still loves him and only married Fleming because she had nowhere else to turn with Duke in prison. The gang goes through with the robbery, but it's a bust. The cops pin it on Duke. Fleming creates an alibi, George Anderson, who needs money to get married. But after George testifies that he was with Duke on the night of the robbery, Fleming double-crosses Duke and gets him sent to prison. George is also imprisoned for perjury. Duke and another prisoner manage an escape. The other prisoner kills a guard and then is killed himself. Duke gets away, and he and Lorna flee to the country. But when they hear the George has been accused of killing the guard and sentenced to die, Duke determines to give himself up. He and Lorna head back to town, but the cops catch them and start shooting. Lorna is killed but Duke gets away. He goes to Fleming's house and calls the warden. He kills Fleming but is injured himself. He lives long enough to clear George, then dies.

Review - Big Shot, The

Not really my kind of movie, but well-acted. Bogart makes it work as the tough career criminal who wants to go straight but can't.
