| Description: | Crooked boxing promoter Nick Benko (Rod Steiger) imports Toro, a big South American fighter and hired Journalist Eddie Willis (Humphrey Bogart) to be his press agent. Eddie knows its a crooked job, but he wants the money. Toro wins a bunch of matches, all fixed. He works his way up to fighting Gus, an ex-heavyweight champion. Gus is seriously injured from his previous fight with Buddy (Max Baer), and when Toro hits him, he keels over and dies. Eddie's wife Beth (Jan Sterling) realizes that her husband is involved in something sleazy, and when he won't quit, she walks out. Toro fights Buddy and gets beat up badly and loses in round 3. He decides to quit, but Nick plans on continuing to schedule matches for him, figuring on making money from people who want to see him lose. Eddie has finally had enough. When he finds out Nick plans on stiffing Toro all the money he's earned, Eddie gives Toro his own money and puts him on a plane to South America. Beth and Eddie get back together. Nick threatened Eddie, but Eddie decides to write an expose. |
