Description:Frenchman Michel Marnay (Charles Boyer) and American Terry McKay (Irene Dunne) meet on a trans-Atlantic cruise and have an affair even though both are engaged to others. When the ship reaches New York, they agree to meet in six months on top of the Empire State Building — if they both end their engagements and find work. Terry becomes a successful nightclub singer, Michel becomes a successful painter. On the chosen day, Terry gets in an accident on her way to the meeting and is unable to walk. She goes to work as a music teacher at an orphanage. Six months later, she goes out for the first time with her old fiancé and sees Michel. This prompts him to look her up and find out why she hadn't shown up. He finds her sitting on her couch and doesn't at first realize that she is crippled, but then he sees on of his paintings (of her) on her wall and puts the pieces together. They embrace, and she promises him she will walk again.

Review - Love Affair

The movie of which An Affair to Remember is an almost exact remake. I like Grant and Kerr better than Boyer and Dunne, and I guess that — and the fact that I knew the plot — is why I liked this one less. It's tough for me to believe that an eight-day fling on a cruise by people who have had many flings, can be so riveting that their passion lasts for an entire year. Nor does it make any sense that Terry wouldn't at least send Michel a note saying, "Sorry, I couldn't make it. I'm crippled."
