Description:Pilot Jed (Richard Widmark) checks into the NYC hotel where his girlfriend, Lyn (Anne Bancroft) is a lounge singer. She says she wants to break up because he doesn't really care about anything. Jed goes upstairs and sees Nell (Marilyn Monroe) in a room across the plaza. She's dressed up fancy and apparently alone. Jed doesn't know she's just babysitting for Bunny, a little girls whose parents are at a convention downstairs. Nell's uncle Eddie, the elevator operator, got her the job. Jed calls Nells room and is invited over. At first, he thinks he's gotten lucky. They share a drink and a kiss, but then Bunny comes out of the next room. Jed gets suspicious when he sees how meanly Nell treats Bunny, almost pushing her out the window at some point. It soon becomes apparent that Nell thinks Jed is her old fiancé Phillip, who died in a plane crash some years before. Jed wants to leave but isn't sure about leaving Nell alone with Bunny. Then Eddie shows up, and Nell, thinking he's trying to keep her away from Phillip, bashes him over the head. While Jed is taking care of Eddie, Nell goes into the next room and ties Bunny up. A nosy couple sticks their heads in to see what's going on, and Jed takes off. He goes downstairs and explains everything to Lyn. The couple call the house detective. The detective, Bunny's mom, and Jed all get back to the room just in time to keep Nell from strangling Bunny. Jed and Lyn follow Nell to the lobby and keep her from slashing her wrists. She's taken to a hospital. Lyn, seeing that Jed really does care, decides to get back together with him.

Review - Don't Bother to Knock

Creepy, especially since I know Monroe had mental issues. I felt like she was letting her real self out. Bancroft was surprisingly lovely in her first role.
