Description:American scientist Ned (Herbert Marshall) is at school in Germany when he meets showgirl Helen (Marlene Dietrich). They marry and return to the U.S. and have a son, Johnny. Ned's work gives him radium poisoning and he had to travel to Europe for the cure, but they don't have the money. Helen goes back to work as a cabaret singer, where she meets millionaire Nick (Cary Grant). Nick gives her the money to send Ned away, and she becomes his mistress so she can send Ned the rest of the money he needs. When he returns, cured, he finds out about Nick and kicks Helen out but insists on keeping Johnny. Helen runs off, keeping one step ahead of the police and detectives looking for her. She becomes more and more destitute and has to turn to prostitution. Finally she realizes she can't take care of Johnny, so she turns him over to Ned. She goes to Paris and sleeps her way to stardom. Nick hears about her and goes to see her, then brings her back to the U.S. He intends to marry her, but first he takes her to Ned's so she can see Johnny. When he sees her with her son, he realizes he's lost her and leaves. Ned tries to resist, but in the end they become a family again.

Review - Blonde Venus

Dietrich was great in this, and Grant was good and likeable, even though he was the other man. Marshall, as Ned, was dull, and it was impossible to believe the character of Helen could be happy with him except for Johnny. It was pre-code and rather racy, but it kept my interest throughout.
