Description:Crime, under boss Al Kruger (Barton MacLane) and his chief operator Bugs Fenner (Humphrey Bogart) is getting out of hand. The police chief makes a big deal out of firing detective Johnny Blake (Edward G. Robinson), then sets him up to be hired by the gang. He hands over info that gets a lot of the rackets shut down, and Fenner suspects him of working with the police. To make himself look good with the gang, he suggests they take over the numbers racket from his friend Lee (Joan Blondell). That racket succeeds while the others, including Fenner's, continue to be shut down. Fenner decides to take over. He kills Kruger, thinking the powers behind the gangs will pick him next, but instead they pick Blake. Blake works it out with the cops to hand over evidence to the big shots just as the cops break in a catch them with it. But Fenner decides to take out Blake. They shoot each other. Fenner dies. Blake is mortally wounded but manages to get the evidence to the top guys and get them arrested before he dies.

Review - Bullets or Ballots

Pretty good movie. This was as cold and evil as I've seen Bogart play in a movie, I think. Robinson was a good actor, but the fact that he was six-10 inches shorter than any of the hoodlums made his tough-guy act a bit hard to buy.
