Cary, Illinois — Fel-Pro Conservation Area

I was walking the trail through the oak woods on the rise above the pond when I spotted this butterfly. It’s wings were considerably chewed up, and I even think it limped when it walked. But it was still capable of flying low and erratically from sunny spot to sunny spot. I caught a brief glimpse of orange spots on the underside of its wings, but in the shade this was the only photograph I managed. It’s a very beautiful butterfly when in its full glory, so hopefully better photographs are coming.
