The sun was sinking fast, so I didn’t have time to get to a more impressive location. That’s why there are power lines and towers in the foreground. But I caught the sun dogs pretty well — they’re those vertical rainbow-looking arcs on either side of the sun. I’m told that white sun dogs are caused by reflections off ice crystals in the clouds while colored sun dogs (like these) are caused by light refracting through the crystals. Supposedly, the name “dog” came about because they often have a “tail” sticking out at the end.
