Sergeant Floyd Monument

As we drove into Sioux City along the Missouri River, I spotted and took a quick photo of a tall monument on a hill above the highway.

I had no idea what it was for, and didn’t think about it again until we struck up a conversation with a guy at the next table at Tastee Inn & Out. He was a local, so I asked him about the “Washington Monument-looking structure.” He said it was the grave site of Sergeant Charles Floyd, the only member of Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery to die during the expedition. He also said it was just up the road. We found it with only a bit of trouble and without going into Nebraska.

There wasn’t a whole lot to it, just the monument and this hard-to-read sign …

and this view over the Missouri River of Nebraska (top) and Sioux City (bottom).

One unexpected benefit of this stop is that I now know how to spell “sergeant.”
