Green River Phosphate

Two years ago, while adventuring around and about, I stopped at the Amboy Pharmacy for one of their famous Green River phosphates. Unfortunately, they were out of Green River phosphates on that day, so I had to settle for a chocolate soda instead. I wrote on my blog that I’d drive as many as 15 miles out of the way to take my wife there.

Recently, we went on another adventure at Buffalo State Park with my niece and her kids. The Amboy Pharmacy was about 15 miles out of our way, so, true to my word, I took my wife.

As I walked in the store, had the following conversation with the woman behind the register.

Me: Is the fountain open?

Woman: It’s always open when the store is open.

Me: Good, because we’ve come about 4,000 miles for one of your famous green river phosphates.

Woman: Ummm, great, but can I say that that’s a little bit weird?

Me: OK, it wasn’t quite 4,000 miles. We live two hours north of here. Do you have green river phosphates? The last time I was here you were sold out.

Woman: Really? That’s really unusual. In fact, I think it’s only happened once.

Anyway, I finally had my green river phosphate — think lime pop. It was tasty, but probably not worth driving 4,000 miles for.

We hung around for 20 minutes or so, enjoying our fountain creations and buying candy we hadn’t seen in years.

The store was built in the 1850’s and has been a pharmacy ever since. There is stuff to buy, but there are also many displays of old merchandise.

Oh, good grief, that is my very, favorite candy bar ever. I used to get it at the convenient store by our house when I was in high school. I do see them every once in a while – so it hasn’t been that long since I’ve had one. I don’t think they’re as creamy as they used to be.
