Butterfield Overland National Historic Trail

From 1858 to 1861, John Butterfield ran a stagecoach line from the Mississippi River to California. Beginning in Arkansas and Missouri, the line passed through Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. For the purposes of my blog, I’m only interested in the Arkansas sites associated with the trail.

Having said that, t’s actually pretty confusing. When I look at the National Park Service site for the Butterfield Trail, it lists a few places, but when I look at the individual places, most of the information is on the Trail of Tears.

Places associated with the trail in Arkansas

Pea Ridge National Military Park (Garfield)

There’s a dirt road through the woods that runs past the Elkhorn Tavern, although the tavern wasn’t an official stop on the trail.

Cadron Settlement Park (Conway)

Cross Hollow (Lowell)

Fitzgerald Station (Springdale)

Potts Inn Museum (Pottsville)
