Spam Museum

We arrived at the Spam Museum in Austin, Minnesota moments after it opened.

As we walked inside, we were greeted by a very enthusiastic woman who told us about everything we were about to see. She then escorted us through the “piggy doors” into a theater where we watched a short movie about Spam.

The entire place was a slightly tongue-in-cheek commercial. As the woman at the front desk had told us, “People like to make fun of Spam, but we don’t mind. Our sales are way up year after year and we’re laughing all the way to the bank.” There were displays about the history of Hormel, about the popularity of Spam during WWII, about the Spamettes singing group, about the Monty Python Spam sketch and so much more.

You could “package” Spam and race against the factory production rate. My wife was foolish enough to challenge my time.

That’s my score on the left.

We wandered about the gift shop and bought some Spam.

While my wife decided what to buy for our daughters, I stacked pigs.

And then, of course …

Jolly Green Giant

This statue stands a quarter mile off I-90 in Blue Earth, Minnesota. There’s really not much else to say, so I’ll just post my photos.

We didn’t stay long.

Bumpin Buffalo

On our last night in the Black Hills, we hit another roadfood.com joint — the Bumpin Buffalo in Hill City. We all ordered buffalo burgers. I got mine with onion rings and was very pleased with it all.

We wandered up the street in search of dessert and found this place a few doors down.

A sign out front said they feature Purple Pie Place pies. I was content with a double cone of huckleberry and chocolate ice cream. My friend ordered a piece of strawberry-rhubarb pie, but when it came, it turned out to be bumbleberry. He was OK with this, but the old guy who owned the place wasn’t. He came over and apologized and talked with us for about 10 minutes. He’s owned the restaurant for 15 years but is looking to sell it. He closes it every winter, donates the leftover ice cream to the local church, and heads for California. He said Hill City shuts down totally in the off-season. The only place that stays open is one bar because “there’s enough drunks in town to keep it going, but they all park in back so Main Street is deserted.” That’s him in both photos with the blue shirt and hat.

We headed back to the lodge, found a table in an alcove and played National Park Memory.

Sylvan Lake — Custer State Park, South Dakota

As we were hiking from the lodge to the trailhead for Sunday Gulch, I spotted two small brown snakes on the path. The first took off into the grass before I could get a picture, but the second one figured that if it couldn’t see me, I couldn’t see it.

After we hiked Sunday Gulch, we circled the lake. In a low, grassy area just a few yards from the water, I spotted another one on the path.

I knew it wasn’t anything dangerous and even figured it was probably some variety of garter snake. I jumped in front of it to block its path to the grass. It hesitated, tried to get past me a few times, then made a sudden lunge and glided over my shoe out of sight. It was done so quickly, it gave the impression that it leaped.

Wandering Garter Snakes are a subspecies of a western species that is closely related to Eastern Garter Snakes. The Black Hills are at the far eastern edge of their range which covers much of the West down into Arizona, north almost to Alaska and extending to the Pacific Coast. They are almost always found close to water. This one was about 18-inches long.
