Bird #162 — Bank Swallow

Bay Park, Michigan — Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron

My family and I visited the shore of Lake Huron where we parked and walked around a small marina. There was a three-foot sand breakwater extending out into the bay. The sides were spotted with holes. The Bank Swallows were zipping in and out of these holes and flying over the harbor.

These Ruddy Turnstones were foraging with a mixed flock of birds in a large dirt field that was being plowed by a tractor. They were following behind and appeared to be eating insects that were being stirred up.

Bird #160 — Black-bellied Plover

pluvialis (rain) squatarola (the gray plover)

Monday, May 26, 1980 — 5:45 pm

Bay Park, Michigan — just south of Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron

Within half a mile of Lake Huron, my family and I saw a large flock of birds milling around behind a tractor that was plowing a large dirt field. Among the mixed flock of Ring-billed Gulls and Killdeers and shorebirds, I discovered two lifers. The Black-bellied Plovers were beautiful, with a striking black and white pattern. They appeared to be picking at insects that were stirred up by the tractor.

I hung around Crabtree for much of the afternoon. I was walking along the path through the woods next to Bulrush Pond. I came upon another small wave of warblers. This Canada Warbler was foraging in the wave.

Barrington, Illinois — Crabtree Nature Center

In front of the visitor center at Crabtree, there is a large meadow leading down to Sulky Pond. In this meadow, there are four or five large oak trees, widely separated from each other. I was walking along the path toward Crabtree Lake when I noticed some warblers moving about the branches of one of these trees. This Blackpoll Warbler was one of them.
