2011 Wisconsin State Fair

I can’t think of anywhere you can go that has quite the mix of things to do, eat and see as a state fair. Here’s a virtual tour of things to see, do and eat at the fair (in no order whatsoever — not even random).

Youngsters show their Holstein cows.

Inside one of the cattle barns.

This is the view we had of most of the cows.

I don’t use the word “cute” very often, at least not in a good sense, but this rabbit …

A Clydesdale just after its bath.

Taking a cow for a stroll. We came out of the cattle barn through a random doorway and found ourselves in an “exhibitors only” alley. Guards were at each end keeping people out, but they paid no attention to us.

The sheep show, which looked more like sheep wrestling.

One of the sine qua nons (without which not) of the Wisconsin State Fair is the cream puffs. The building where they are made and sold was packed and the line was long. This worker looked up and saw me taking her photo — she’s just beginning to break into a huge smile.

The cream puffs. I must admit that, after eating mine, I decided they fell more into the category of sina qua quisquis (without which … whatever). They weren’t awful, but I have yet to write home to mother about them.

Near the end of our stay, we took the sky lift across the fair. Here are just two of the hundreds of garish food booths.

A live reptile as seen from the sky lift.

Just to prove we were there …

A chicken. That’s my guess anyway.

A rooster

Swine show

Roasted corn — the best food in the park, in my opinion.

A winner in the flower show. I am unable to account for the attacking lobster.

A bluegill in the DNR building. When I was a kid, they used to have all sorts of Wisconsin wild animals in cages, but no more.
