Praying Mantis

They don’t bite, exactly. But this one gave me a good jab in the finger when I plucked it off a grass stem and dropped it on the chair. It immediately assumed this stance to let me know it would be happy to jab me again, given the opportunity.

When it determined just how chicken I was to tangle with it again, it hopped on the back of the chair and climbed to the top. It struck this pose just before taking off across the prairie.

The thing was huge, and earlier, when I first saw it flying low over the grass, I thought it was a deranged bird.
