In October, 2026, the Marsh Wren was split into two species — Eastern and Western. According to my eBird records, I saw my first Western Marsh Wren in January, 2018, but I don’t remember that bird. After all, it was just a Marsh Wren at the time.
I do remember two other sightings of Western Marsh Wren, however, because I photographed the birds.
The first was at Frederick Lake Recreation Area along the Milavec Reservoir. I’d gone there to see the Pink-footed Goose that was hanging around, and while I was there, I walked around the shore of the lake to look for other birds. I spotted the wren in a tiny patch of reeds and got it to pose long enough for a couple photos.
I also managed a photo of one I saw a Chico Basin Ranch on April 19, 2022. This one, I remember, was singing, but I didn’t know I was listening for a different song.
