Wilkinson was dishonest, without principles, but personable. He managed a varied life: Toady to Gage in the Revolutionary War, land speculator, Indian fighter and agent. He conspired with Spain to divide the U.S.; conspired with Burr than exposed him; failed as general in Canada in 1813; and ended up schemein in newly-independent Mexico in political, land and money deals.
