She meets Carl, a Czech former doctor who immigrated and is working in a lumber camp when she has to assist him with surgery after an accident. The two become close, but when Jennifer's mother dies back in England, she has to go home to be with her father. Carl decides to pursue medicine again and travels to England to be near Jennifer. Review - Far Country, The

Shute certainly takes his time about a story. In this case, it's a third of the way in to the book before we even know one of the main characters in a significant way. But if you've got the time to read, the story unfolds beautifully — even with some rather stilted dialogue along the way. I think Shute concentrates more on how he thinks people should talk than on how they actually do.
