| Notes: | Germain, a widower farmer, travels to court a rich widow. On the journey, he escorts Marie, a poor neighbor, to a new job. They get lost in a fog and spend the night by a pond in the woods. When they finally arrive at their destination, Germain rejects the haughty widow he set out to court, and Marie has to flee from her new master, who attempts to seduce her. COMMENTS — The Haunted Pool is also known as The Devil’s Pool. George Sand was really Amandine-Aurore-Lucile Dudevant, a writer known for her rustic novels and her numerous love affairs with, among others, Prosper Merimee and Frederic Chopin. |
