Reviews for The Mysteries of Udolpho
Review - Mysteries of Udolpho, The
One of the first, and probably the most famous, of the gothic romances published in the late 1700s. This is the book that Jane Austen wrote Northanger Abbey as a parody of, and you will probably enjoy that book more if you read this book first. All the action occurs during Autumn evenings with impending thunder storms. The book is loaded with commas, descriptions of lonely mountains, Emily's faiting spells and mysterious shadows. Poems that have nothing to do with anything keep cropping up inexplicably. The plot wasn't bad (when the characters weren't fainting) but the writing style I can do without.
