Notes:As Inspector Grant is leaving a train in Scotland, he comes upon the surly sleeping-car attendant trying to shake awake the apparently drunk passenger in B Seven. Grant at once sees that the passenger is, in fact, dead. He happens to pick up a newspaper from the floor and discovers some lines of poetry:
The beasts that talk,
The streams that stand,
The stones that walk,
The singing sand.

The death is determined to be accidental, and Grant is supposed to be on vacation, but he can't get those lines out of his head.

Review - Singing Sands, The

I enjoy Tey's mysteries more than most. Her writing is far better, and her characters are rounded out better. This story is set in Scotland and captures some of the atmosphere with an occasional bit of humor. It's not my favorite book, but it's a comfortable one-day read.
