Notes:Say is a fifteen-year old boy who has been shot and wounded in the Civil War. He is rescued by Pinkus (Pink), who carries him home to his house. Pink's mother cares for the two boys until one day marauders come to her house - she hides the boys, and she ends up being shot to death. A very touching book covering racial issues, Civil War, slavery and Lincoln (Say tells Pink that once he shook the hand of Lincoln. A very touching part at the end of the book is when the author recollects when her own father told her, "This is the hand that touched the hand that touched the hand that touched the hand of Lincoln.")

Review - Pink and Say

I'm with Kelli and Craig. The subject matter is more appropriate for older children than the book appears to be designed for. It also assumes a lot more knowledge about the Civil War than most kids would have.
