Review - Light Fantastic, The
Rincewind and Twoflower (and his luggage) are mysteriously saved. It turns out that Rincewind has one of the eight great spells in his head and the other seven spells need him to stay alive. The party travels to the mountains at the hub of Discworld and again have several dangerous adventures. While all this is going on, a wizard named Trymon is staging a coup and planning to steal the great spells. He sends out all sorts of parties to hunt for Rincewind who is finally caught, then escapes, then is caught and escapes again. He decides he’s had enough and travels to the city to make the spell leave his head and return to the book where he got it. Trymon reads the other spells and loses his mind. Rincewind, finally taking the initiative, battle him to the death and makes all eight spells return to the book. Twoflower’s luggage then eats the book. Twoflower returns home, his tourist vacation over. Rincewind, having been given the luggage, decides to become a powerful wizard.
I started this book the same evening I finished the first one after a long day of getting my daughter registered and moved into college and after a tearful farewell. I finished it a few days after returning home. It wasn’t quite as good, but was still quirky and interesting.
