Review - Clouds of Witness
The first time I "read" this book, I listened to it read on tape by a man who could not have been more annoying. This time I read it myself and hardly annoyed me at all.
It took me a long time to get into it. I think this had more to do with the confusion of the season and other things on my mind than with the book itself. I finally sat down and read the final 200 pages in two sittings and enjoyed it a good deal more.
This was Sayers' first Lord Peter Wimsey mystery, and it didn't focus on Wimsey's character as much as it probably should have. I suspect he's the reason for the longevity of the series. The plot, with three or four coincidental occurances happening on the ground of an English manor on the night of a murder, was clever. Sayers has a fun style of writing. I suspect I'll go on and read more in the series in the not-too-distant future.
