| Notes: | McPhee, in his usual fashion, travels around the New Jersey Pine Barrens discussing the people, the land, the history, the forest fires, the blueberry and cranberry harvests and the nature. The Barrens are (or rather, were) a huge wilderness area smack in the middle of the most densely populated state, within easy commuting distance of New York and Philadelphia. It was rather sad, because even back in 1968, there were all sorts of threatened developments and I imagine a lot of what he describes is gone. (Although I think the National Park Service is now involved.) |
