An excellent biography that covered Audubon’s life, but also mentioned quite a bit about the birds and animals he saw and painted, with excerpts from his journals and letters. The book also painted an excellent picture of life in America and England in the first half of the 1800s. Audubon’s wife, Lucy, his sons Victor and John, and his other family and friends were all presented clearly so that I got to know them.

Review - John James Audubon

It made me want to read Audubon’s bird biographies. It was also the first time I can remember coming very near to crying at the end of a biography. I mean, of course the guy dies. I knew he would, but still … The only thing that kept it from being a 10 is that his years in England when he traveled around drumming up money for his books was somewhat dull in the telling, but that wasn’t the author’s fault.
