Review - Gullible's Travels
Why I read the book: Kelli gave it to me to read.
What the book was about: Peters is a journalist who visits stupid tourist spots and does reports on them on the radio. The book records his (supposedly) final year on the job as he visits Boston, Minneapolis, Memphis and various other places. It’s mostly about him, since he claims to be uninterested in almost everything he sees and rarely spends much time any place. He tries to stir up controversy by asking obnoxious questions, like whether the tour of Graceland doesn’t include Elvis’s bedroom because there are stains on the sheets.
What I liked about the book: It was mildly humorous from time to time and laugh-out-loud funny once or twice.
What I didn’t like about the book: Peters spends most of the book whining about how much he hates his job and how he’s wasting his life and unhappy. Since it so happens that he’s a Buddhist and a homosexual, this wasn’t a surprise to me. And it got tiring.
Recommendation: Somebody who does what he does and who actually has a sense of humor and a healthy approach to life could have made a really funny, great book out of this idea, but this book was just sad.
