Notes:Night and day, young Dr. Frankenstein struggled to discover the forbidden secret that would give life to an inanimate being. After two years of fevered labor, he had succeeded in creating the form of a man — a man of a size and muscular strength never before seen in the natural world. Then, one dreary night, Frankenstein administered the spark of life. With an awesome shudder, the creature opened its eyes and began to rise from the laboratory table — and in overwhelming horror its creator fled from what he had unleashed upon the world.

COMMENTS — First of all, Frankenstein is the doctor, not the monster. Second, did you know that Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was only 19 when she wrote it? It happened like this: Lord Byron, Dr. Polidori, Percy Shelley and his wife, Mary, were looking for a way to pass the time during a rainy summer in Switzerland. Byron proposed that they have a story contest. Byron and Shelley produced nothing of value. Dr. Polidori wrote an interesting vampire story. And Mary wrote Frankenstein, inspired by a terrifying dream she had one night.
