Notes:The 10th book in the Cadfael series. King Stephen is in prison and Empress Maud is attempting to take over the throne of England. During the celebration for St. Winifred, pilgrims travel to Cadfael's abbey to be healed. Among them are Ciaran, a young man fulfilling a vow to walk to Wales barefoot and carrying a heavy cross and Luc, his companion, sworn to accompany him. But all is not as it seems. Ciaran killed one of Maud's knights in London and was sent on his journey as punishment. Luc is following to see he carries it out and to kill him if he doesn't. Cadfael intervenes to send Ciaran on his way and release Luc from his vengeance to marry Melangell.

Review - Pilgrim of Hate, The

The story unfolded slowly but kept my interest. I prefer the more local mysteries in the series over those, like this one, that involve the Civil War, but I still enjoyed it. The goofy stuff about St. Winifred healing Melangell's kid brother was annoying.
