Notes:A firsthand account of a trip from the source of the Amazon river in Peru to the mouth on the Atlantic Ocean in Brazil, 4,200 miles. The author, an American without experience at kayaking, walked the first, white-water portion, then rafted the rest of the white water, then kayaked with one other member all the way to the ocean. There's a lot about the people they met along the river and the relationships between expedition members.

Review - Running the Amazon

The first half of the book seemed to be mostly about the squabbles between the members of the expedition and the South African who was supposedly the leader. But after he quit in a huff and the trip was continued by the author and a Pole, Piotr Chmielinski, with two others traveling by land as support, it got much more interesting and sucked me into the story. I was moved by the idea of adventure, although I'm not sure I'd want that particular adventure.
