Notes:Although Mt. McKinley had been climbed hundreds of times in the summer, eight guys set out to be the first to climb it in the winter. They set out in January, 1967 and, almost immediately, one of them fell into a crevasse on the glacier and died. The others continued the climb. Three of them, including the author, made it to the summit and then got caught in a storm and had to hole up in a tiny hole in the ice for a week until the weather let up and they could stumble down to the point where they were rescued halfway down the mountain. While they were caught in the storm, winds of near 100 MPH and -50 temperatures combined to create a wind chill of about -148. All three, and some of the other four, suffered frostbite, but otherwise escaped without harm.

Review - Minus 148

Yet another book about a bunch of idiots who set out to do something dangerous and stupid and consider themselves heroic because they survived, even though one of them died and the rest had to be rescued at the time and expense of many other people.
