Notes:The Italian Bonatti was one of the foremost mountain climbers from the late 1940s into the 1960s. His exploits, often accomplished alone, set new standards, especially since he insisted on classic climbing without all the new equipment which makes everyone an expert. Chapters of this book, all headed by the editor, give the details of his more spectacular climbs. Much of the book is taken up with the controversy involving the first ascent of K2 in which Bonatti was accused of trying to steal the fame for himself. The book ends with his appeal to the next generation of climbers to return to the classic style.

Reviews for The Mountains of My Life

Review - Mountains of My Life, The

Bonatti was undoubtedly one of the greatest climbers of all time. He was also conceited, driven and apparently very difficult to like. As for the controversy involving K2, there is photographic evidence supporting his side of the argument, so it's really not much of a story.

The book is well written, although Bonatti's mountain-as-religion message was wearying. And for someone not interested in the sport, one mountain sounds much like the next, so it felt a lot like every chapter was a repeat.
