Notes:The author reports on three expeditions to explore a large cave on the border of France and Spain. Entrance could only be gained by being lowered on a cable down a vertical shaft taller than the Eiffel Tower. The cave bottom was 2,389 feet below the entrance, at that time the deepest cave discovered. On the first expedition, in 1951, one of the members fell to his death. A fourth expedition was launched in 1954 to bring his body to the surface. Additional chapters cover cave formations, bats and other explorations.

Review - Descent of Pierre Saint-Martin, The

The writing, or at least the translation, reads like an encyclopedia entry, with only occasional glimpses of personality. One chapter opens with a condemnation of those who destroy cave formations for their own purposes, then goes on for many pages to describe how the author amassed a large collection of his own. In many ways, it read like a mountain climbing account, but since I've actually been in an unimproved cave, I was better able to relate.
